In Writing Down the Bones, Natalie Goldberg talks about the importance of writing as a practice. As I read through this very small, yet very potent chapter I was pleasantly surprised to see, towards the end of the chapter (Chapter 3) that Natalie encourages the reader to do a writing exercise; an exercise that I do almost daily.
I want to share this great challenge from Natalie’s book, Writing Down the Bones:
“Sit down right now. Give me this moment. Write whatever’s running through you. You might start with “this moment” and end up writing about the gardenia you wore at your wedding seven years ago. That’s fine. Don’t try to control it. Stay present with whatever comes up, and keep your hand moving.”
At This Moment – Is a great place to start a creative writing exercise. I cannot tell you how important it is to get in a habit of writing. Write big, write small- just write! I use ‘This Moment’ because it is such a great place: This moment
Where is This Moment ?
It could be while you are in the bathtub contemplating life’s deep meanings. It can be on a distant planet, an undiscovered alien mountain range. It can be under the desk in the oval office witnessing a plan to take over the White House. It can be sitting on a raft, praying to be saved after floating, lost at sea for the last few months.
At This Moment you can be you, or, you can be me. You can be missionary in a forieghn country, or, you can be a creature in the ocean depths. At This Moment you can be who ever you want to be, doing what ever you want to be doing, in any time, any place, any reality that YOU WANT TO BE.
That is the beauty of At This Moment exercises.
I want to encourage you to take a few minutes every day to write something. Write, write, write! and if you are running into a wall. Just look around you, sit down, take out your pen and pad and write at the top left hand corner of your paper ‘In This Moment’ and stop writing when you are finished.
On this page, I will post the results of my personal ‘In This Moment’ exercises. Hope you enjoy, and feel free to send share some of your own moments. I would love to share some of your creative moments here as well.
